The End of Mortgage Interest Relief
What was Mortgage Interest Relief?
Mortgage Interest Relief was a tax relief that was available up to the end of 2020. It reduced the interest paid on qualifying home loans taken out after 1 January 2004 and up to the 31 December 2012.
Loans taken out after 31 December 2012 are no longer eligible for mortgage interest relief.
A “Help to Buy” (HTB) scheme has been launched since the closure of the Mortgage Interest Relief scheme. Under the Help to Buy incentive. first-time property purchasers can receive a refund of Irish Income Tax and Deposit Interest Retention Tax (DIRT) which will help with the deposit needed to purchase or self-build a new house or apartment.
